Death of a loved one 'affects health of elderly'

Losing a loved one can have a detrimental affect on the health of the elderly, according to a study.

Dr Anna Phillips, reader in Behavioural Medicine at the University of Birmingham, explained that grief weakened elderly people's immune systems.

She told BBC Radio 5 live's Drive: "In older people after a bereavement, these cells weren't working as efficiently."

The study of 100 participants, half of whom were aged over 65 and half aged 18-45, showed young people's immunity was unaffected by bereavement.
