Weight loss surgery 'cured my type 2 diabetes'

A new study has revealed that weight loss surgery, such as the fitting of a gastric band, can reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by around 80% in obese people.

Marian Burfield, who suffered from the condition, found that her diabetes "disappeared" and "didn't come back" within a month of having weight loss surgery.

Dr Omar Khan, one of the authors of the research, advocated that morbidly obese individuals should be given bariatric surgery before they suffer complications from their weight, in contrast to the current system.

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4's Today programme on November 3 2014.
