An extraordinary 16th Century outfit

Matthaeus Schwarz was an accountant who lived in 16th Century Germany - but he also had a passion for fashion.

In an extraordinary undertaking that spanned 40 years, Schwarz recorded in detail what he wore, creating what historians now think is the world's first fashion book.

Costume and stage designer Jenny Tiramani was tasked with recreating one of the highly elaborate outfits detailed in Schwarz's book. Here, she explains the various elements of the outfit as she dresses model Jack Brotchie.
