A decade of Facebook: By the numbers

Facebook is celebrating its tenth birthday this week with record earnings and 1.2 billion users. But who is using it and how?

Facebook launched on 4 February 2004, in a dorm room at Harvard University as a way for students to connect with friends.

A decade later, the social media giant has more than 1.2 billion active users worldwide.

As the site celebrates its 10th birthday, the BBC's David Botti takes a look at the numbers to see how Facebook has changed its users' lives.
