Do snails 'have a homing instinct'?

A 69-year-old amateur scientist may have proven that garden snails have a homing instinct.

Ruth Brooks became exasperated with snails in her garden ruining her plants, but was reluctant to kill them. Working with a biologist at Exeter University, she helped devise a series of experiments to assess the snails' alleged homing ability.

The result has astonished some professionals who believe that snails are far too simple creatures to find their way home.
