Europe plans Moon mission

The European Space Agency is planning an unmanned mission to the Moon's southern pole.

It will launch towards the end of this decade and put down on the rim of a large crater.

It will conduct experiments that may help future human explorers - checking the local environment for hazards and looking for possible resources in the regolith, or "soil".

This animation shows how the mission might look.
