GM crops 'advantageous' - NFU

The National Farmers' Union says it supports the environment secretary's view to push for more GM crops.

GM crops are probably safer than conventional plants according to the Environment Secretary.

Owen Paterson says the government has a duty to explain to the public that the technology is safe and can bring many benefits, such as higher crop yields and a reduction in pesticide use.

Adam Quinney, vice president of the National Farmers' Union, said GM could provide real advantages, such as reducing use of pesticides.
