Nigeria President defends Boko Haram response

Hundreds of people are reported to have been killed in a series of attacks in Northern Nigeria by the same Islamist group behind the mass abduction of school girls three weeks ago.

In the town of Gamboru Ngala, witnesses said gunmen had fired on a crowded market place and set fire to homes.

The United States and Britain is part of a growing international effort to help the Nigerian authorities who claim they are fighting a war.
