Historian: 'Beetroot is not an alternative for lipstick'

Russian politician Igor Chernishev has written that women who are struggling to afford imported beauty products should use beetroot instead of lipstick.

Responding to his claims, historian Sally Pointer said that Chernishev had "missed the point" and that there were many cheap brands of makeup available to women.

Ms Pointer noted that beetroot had been suggested as an alternative to lipstick during the Second World War, but stated that it was a "tongue in cheek" assertion by the British media at the time.
