The first sediments drilled from the Amundsen Sea Embayment should hold clues to the future behaviour of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet.

Karsten Gohl from the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI) led the expedition to retrieve the samples. He spoke to our science correspondent Jonathan Amos.
