3D mapping Christ the Redeemer
The PUC University of Rio de Janeiro, software producer Pix4D and Canadian drone company Aeryon have all taken part in a project to create a digital replica of the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio.
The team conducted 19 drone flights over the statue in order to capture thousands of images that they could then turn into data points.
These data points were then used to recreate the famous landmark as a wireframe mesh made up of 2.5 million triangles.
Accurate 3D reconstruction has previously not been possible due to the statue's location on the Corcovado Mountain.
BBC Click spoke to Pix4D's CEO Christoph Strecha about how the project came together and how it can help protect the statue in the future.
