Rail ticket machines 'confuse passengers'

British rail companies are being told to simplify their computerised ticket machines because many people find them too difficult to use.

Customer watchdog Passenger Focus said some travellers preferred to queue to speak to ticket office staff, despite ticket machines standing empty.

It said the machines often do not explain limitations on tickets, such as when peak hours are in effect.
