Finding an alternative to cheques before they are phased out

A year ago, the Payments Council announced plans to phase out cheques in the UK. Since then it has come under pressure from charities and small business groups, to justify the plan which would see cheques disappear by 2018.

Cheques have been around for 350 years but have been used less and less in recent years. In 1990 11 million cheques were processed each day but by last year just 3.5 million were processed.

Sandra Quinn from the Payments Council says an alternative to cheques must be ''developed and produced by 2018''.
