Salford killing: Shooting death treated as hate crime
Greater Manchester Police say they are treating the shooting dead of an Indian student on Boxing Day as a hate crime.
Chief Superintendent Kevin Mulligan stressed there was no evidence yet that the killing of 23-year-old Anuj Bidve in Salford was racially motivated, but there was a "perception in the community" that racism may have been the motive.
Anuj Bidve was shot in the head at close range in Ordsall Lane. He had travelled to the UK from India to study at Lancaster University and was in Greater Manchester for the festive period.
Police have appealed to the public for help in finding the firearm used to shoot him.
Five people are in custody, being questioned about the killing.
