Getting on the property ladder in the 1970s

In the early 1970s the Bank of England relaxed its lending rules and high street banks were able to offer mortgages.

As mortgage availability increased millions stepped onto the property ladder, swapping city terraces for airy suburban new-builds and fuelling a massive housing boom.
