Birmingham Spaghetti Junction turns 40

On this day in 1972, Britain's latest motorway intersection, the Gravelly Hill Interchange opened. At the time T-Rex were number one, "Carry on Abroad" was on at the cinema and a pint of bitter cost just 15p.

The section of the M6 in Birmingham is better known as Spaghetti Junction, and it turns 40 years old today. It remains the most complex junction in the UK, and has become something of a landmark.

Phil Mackie reports.
