Why is handball so important to Iceland?

When Iceland won the silver medal in handball at the last Olympics, the president called it "the greatest moment in Iceland's sporting history".

On Wednesday a 16,000 capacity crowd watched the Icelandic team take on Hungary in the first quarter-final of the London Games, including many Icelanders who had come over specially.

So why is the game so important to Iceland, and what would defeat mean for them?
