Andy Burnham calls for Hillsborough proceedings
The former culture secretary, Andy Burnham, was instrumental in setting up the panel that produced the report into the Hillsborough disaster revealed yesterday.
He told the World at One that he regards the Hillsborough disaster as "one of the greatest injustices of the 20th century".
Mr Burnham said a fresh inquest into the tragedy "is now essential", and one which would have to hear all the statements from the police officers before they were amended.
"I won't be able to rest until that verdict of accidental death is overturned and removed from the official record," he said.
He told Martha Kearney he thinks there need to be proceedings against those who "wilfully distorted the truth".
