Mother 'will continue fight'

Relatives of soldiers killed in Iraq have been told by the Court of Appeal that they can sue the government for negligence.

The families say the Ministry of Defence failed in its duty of care, because it did not provide the servicemen with adequate equipment, including armoured vehicles to protect against roadside bombs. But the families will not be able to make a claim for compensation under the European Convention on Human Rights

One of the relatives involved, Sue Smith, whose son Phillip Hewett died in Iraq seven years ago, told The World At One presenter Shaun Ley that she would "continue to fight".

"I just don't understand how you can turn round and say somebody has no right to to life just because they put a uniform on."
