Submarine HMS Astute killing: Widow 'heartened' by inquest

A coroner in Southampton has returned a verdict of unlawful killing on a naval officer who was shot dead on a nuclear submarine in April 2011.

Lt Cdr Ian Molyneux, 36, was shot by sailor Ryan Donovan, 23, on board HMS Astute when it was docked in Southampton.

Donovan had been on a two-day drinking binge in the city before the shooting, and the coroner recommended that a system of alcohol testing before duty be introduced.

Ian Molyneux's widow, Gillian, said she was heartened by the coroner's decision to endorse random breath testing for Royal Navy personnel.
