PM: Gay marriage 'an important step forward'

David Cameron has said that the introduction of gay marriage in the UK would be an "important step forward" that would "make society stronger".

The prime minister's comments came shortly before a vote on the issue in the House of Commons. A number of Conservative MPs have said they will vote against the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill.
