Wandsworth Road home on show

The latest property in the National Trust's portfolio is rather different to the stately homes and gardens you might expect, it's number 575 Wandsworth Road.

The small unassuming Georgian terraced house has an interior that had been a labour of love by the Kenyan poet and author Khadambi Asalache. The detailed hand-carved pine fretwork was first made to cover a damp patch, but now continues throughout the house.

Curator Tessa Wild told the Today programme's Nicole Stanbridge that there is a "lovely, lively quality to the fretwork", which depicts angels with trumpets and birds, adding that there are "extraordinary details everywhere".

Mr Asalache's partner Susie Thompson said that she was "always aware of the tremendous privilege of being here, but it was home".

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4's Today programme on Saturday 2 March 2013.
