John Humphrys' chess challenge

The world's best chess players are London today for the start of a tournament that gives them a shot at the big time - playing reigning champion Viswanathan Anand for the world title.

It is attracting a lot of attention - partly because there is a new super star on the chess scene.

He is a Norwegian called Magnus Carlsen and his ratings make him the best player in the world and he is only 22 years old.

Is chess about to burst back into the public eye, attracting attention it hasn't seen since the 1970s?

The Today programme's John Humphrys has been putting his own strategic brilliance to the test in a game with journalist and county chess player Dominic Lawson.

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4's Today programme on Friday 15 March 2013.
