Damian Green: code makes victims 'central' in court
Damian Green, the minister for policing, criminal justice and victims has said that allowing victims to make a statement in court will make them feel "central" to the judicial process - and not just an afterthought.
The new code for England and Wales will automatically allow victims to address the judge and the offender before sentencing.
The Conservative MP told BBC Radio 5 live's Breakfast: "It will be much more cathartic experience for them if they can read out their statement themselves, possibly looking the criminal in the eye and saying 'this has been your long term effect on my life.'"
However Labour have argued that the revised Victim's Code is toothless and should be made law instead.
