Ed Balls angry at six figure Sharon Shoesmith payout

Ed Balls has told the BBC that a six figure pay-off for the former head of children's services at Haringey Council "sticks in the craw".

Sharon Shoesmith was sacked in 2008 following the death of baby Peter Connelly, but won a ruling in 2011 that she was unfairly dismissed.

Mr Balls told BBC Radio 5 live's Dominic Laurie: "Of course it leaves a bad taste in the mouth that the person who was leading that department and was responsible ends up walking away with - it seems - a large amount of money."

A statement from Haringey Council confirmed it had reached a settlement with Ms Shoesmith but that the terms of the settlement were confidential and it was unable to comment further.
