Treacy: Sex offences guidance 'sends strong message'

The Sentencing Council has published new sentencing guidelines for sexual offences, with the focus now reflecting the offender's motivation to a greater degree and the effects of the crime on the victim.

The chairman of the Sentencing Council, Lord Justice Treacy, told the Today programme the changes send out "a very strong message".

"This is a piece of work we've been engaged on for over two years," he explained.

"It's coincidental that cases such as the Jimmy Savile case or the Stuart Hall case arose in the middle of the work we were doing," he added.

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4's Today programme on Thursday 12 December 2013.
