Make former drug addicts magistrates, think tank claims

Former drug addicts and ex-offenders should be allowed to sit as magistrates, according to a right-wing think tank.

Policy Exchange said the move could help the addict to stay clean, with the Judge acting like a mentor, offering praise and support.

Chairman of the Magistrates Association Richard Monkhouse told BBC Radio 5 live's Victoria Derbyshire: "If we can use people who've been through the process then that's entirely helpful."

The Ministry of Justice said crimes did not disqualify people from being magistrates but they should be "people of integrity".
