Wales mine deaths trial begins

The trial of Malcolm Fyfield, 58, accused of causing the death of his four colleagues through gross negligence at Gleision mine in September 2011 has started at Swansea Crown Court.

A jury has heard how four miners died in an explosion at a colliery in south Wales three years ago.

The evidence was given at the trial of the former manager of the pit, who is accused of causing their deaths.

Malcolm Fyfield was one of three men who escaped when the Gleision mine flooded, near Pontardawe. He denies charges of manslaughter by gross negligence.

Hywel Griffiths reports.
