First gay couples marry at midnight

The first same sex marriages in England and Wales take place shortly after midnight on Friday, as the law allowing them comes into effect.

From midnight same sex couples in England and Wales who want to have a wedding, not a civil partnership, can have one.

The government's controversial legislation was passed last summer, and some weddings take place in the early hours of the morning.
