Sun defends politicians posing with special edition paper

Sun managing editor Stig Abell has told the BBC the paper's World Cup special edition was only ever meant to be "fun and lighthearted".

His comments came after the Labour leader, Ed Miliband, apologised to people in Merseyside who took offence when he posed with a copy of the free paper.

For years the Sun has been heavily criticised in Liverpool for its coverage of the Hillsborough disaster in 1989.

Mr Miliband, David Cameron and Nick Clegg all posed with copies of the Sun.

Speaking to Ed Stourton on Radio 4, Mr Abell stressed the edition had not been delivered in the Liverpool area.
