Magistrates 'not doing their jobs properly'

Courts in England and Wales have wasted almost £250m last year by remanding people in custody unnecessarily, according to the Howard League for Penal Reform.

The charity's Chief Executive, Frances Crook, said magistrates have failed to do their jobs "properly".

But the Magistrates' Association said the charity did not appreciate the way remand decisions were taken.
