Fazana's story: The brides who end up as UK slaves
BBC Newsnight has spoken to women who came to the UK as brides but ended up enslaved by their British-born husbands and families.
Campaigners say such cases are just the tip of the iceberg, but there are believed to have been only two successful prosecutions.
One lawyer in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, who has helped numerous women escape violent homes, says many victims are discouraged from taking legal action by the police.
The police say victims can be confident they will do everything they can to protect them.
Newsnight special correspondent Katie Razzall spoke to Fazana - not her real name - about the abuse she suffered from her husband and his mother. Her words are spoken by an actor.
