UK government 'had secret talks' to win over Sunni tribes
Tony Blair's former chief of staff has revealed the UK government had secret talks to "win over" Sunni tribes after the fall of Saddam Hussein in 2004.
Jonathan Powell said the talks "led up to the Anbar awakening" and allowed the Sunni tribes to rise up against Al Qaeda "very effectively".
However, he said the talks had since been "abandoned" and more should have been done to "establish real dialogue" between the Shia and Sunni Muslims.
