Capability assessment waits 'will take 18 months to reduce'

Hundreds of extra staff are being hired to help clear the backlog of people who are waiting to have fitness-for-work benefit tests.

The American firm Maximus was last week awarded a £500m contract to carry out the tests - but it admits it could take 18 months to reduce lengthy waiting times.

The previous contractor Atos has been heavily criticised for the backlog of more than 600,000 cases.
