Hammond: Bahrain base 'to protect UK interests'
Britain's first permanent military base in the Middle East for over 40 years is to be created at the Mina Salman Port in Bahrain, the foreign secretary has confirmed.
Philip Hammond said the base would improve the "poor, temporary facilities" which have been used since the UK formally withdrew from the region in 1971.
Acknowledging questions over Bahrain's human rights record, Mr Hammond said the country was "making progress".
