Nearly £3bn of child maintenance debt 'uncollectable'

Nearly £3 billion owed in child maintenance may never be recovered, government accounts show.

The money is owed by absent parents who have been referred to the Child Support Agency.

However, the 5 Live Investigates radio programme has learned that the huge sum has been labelled as "uncollectable" in accounts submitted to Parliament.

The government insists that does not mean it is writing off the debt.

Adrian Goldberg reports.
