Scheme to cut women prisoners in England to be extended

A pioneering new scheme which aims to offer women an alternative punishment to going to jail is to be extended in England.

The project, which began in Cheshire, is due to be extended to six other areas.

Justice Minister Simon Hughes has given his support to the scheme having said he wants to see the number of female prisoners halved.
