Plans to overhaul north of England transport to be set out

Plans are being unveiled by the government to overhaul transport across the north of England.

They could include high speed trains between Liverpool and Manchester, a road tunnel under the Peak District and smart travel cards.

Shadow transport secretary Michael Dugher has described the move as a "desperate, last-ditch attempt to win votes in the North" by the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats, ahead of the forthcoming general election.

However, Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin, rejected Mr Dugher's comments and said that the plans were being supported by Labour leaders in the north.
