Relentless detective shortlisted for national award

A Cheshire police detective who was so determined to solve a robbery case that he studied the law in his spare time has been nominated for the Police Federation National Detective Awards.

Det Con Stephen Hopkins took up the case of an 85-year-old World War II veteran who was attacked in his own home in 2010 and wanted to find out who did it, despite the case's only witness, the victim, dying five months after the attack.

Det Con Hopkins told Radio 5 live's Shelagh Fogarty what happened.
