50th anniversary of first Dartford tunnel crossing

Fifty years ago the first Dartford tunnel opened, allowing motorists to drive between Kent and Essex without having to go into London first.

The first bore was unveiled in November 1963 with drivers paying a toll of two shillings and six pence for a car.
