Private ambulances: 999 calls costs rise to £68m

Ambulance trusts in England paid £68m to private firms to answer 999 calls in 2015/16.

The cost has trebled in four years, according to figures obtained by the BBC.

A rise in 999 calls and a fall in the number of paramedics is being blamed for the rise in payments.
