Congestion easing scheme opens on M6 around Birmingham
Journey times on one of the busiest sections of motorway in the country are expected to improve from Wednesday.
It follows the completion of the latest section of the Highways Agency's Smart Motorway scheme on the M6, between junctions 5 and 8.
The Highways Agency said the approach cost about 20% of what it would take to widen motorways.
The system, first trialled on the M42, allows drivers to use the hard shoulder at peak times to ease congestion.
Work on the £105m project, which included lane and overnight closures, has previously been criticised by Birmingham business groups for damaging the local economy.
Peter Plisner reports.
