Free bike scheme proves popular for Birmingham

A project to offer free bikes to residents has proved popular in its first year.

Birmingham City Council handed out 3,500 bikes a year ago to residents who applied to join the cycle scheme.

A small number of bikes were stolen, and there have been some attempts to sell them online, but the council says the project has been "life-changing" for most of the new cyclists.

The Department for Transport is funding the giveaway, and another 1,000 bikes will be distributed next year.

The bikes are fitted with GPS trackers, so staff running the scheme can check up on cycle use.
