Bristol war memorial names researched by former army officer
An army officer has spent three years researching how each of the men listed on a Bristol war memorial lost their lives in World War One.
Retired Lieutenant Colonel Steen Clarke has published a book about the 27 men, who were all pupils at St John's Church of England Primary, which he also attended.
He decided to investigate the fates of the men whose names sit on a Grade II listed memorial on the corner of Whiteladies and Apsley Road in Clifton.
Thanks to his efforts, money has also been raised to restore the war memorial using a specialist company and work will be completed before Remembrance Day 2016.
The records in the book will also act as a reminder of their sacrifice to current pupils at the school.
Students have been writing their own tributes to the fallen soldiers killed at the Western Front.
