Shoes exchanged for music between Bristol and Hanover after WW2

Children from schools in Bristol and Hanover in Germany are to perform at Colston Hall to mark the 70th anniversary of their friendship.

They were the first English and German cities to be twinned soon after the World War Two.

In 1947, Germany was still recovering from the war and, following a bitter winter, children from Bristol sent shoes to the poverty stricken children of Hanover.

Having no money, Hanover returned the gesture with music.
