Cumbria rail travellers face Easter weekend disruption

Improvement works on the West Coast mainline are set to cause major disruption for those travelling over the Easter weekend.

Network Rail is carrying out work on the line north of Carlisle at Gretna Junction and between Lockerbie and Carstairs, which is expected to affect passengers travelling to Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Passengers travelling south will also face disruption, with services running through Penrith and Oxenholme also affected.

Network Rail said the work, which begins on Friday, is "essential" for passenger safety and will improve service reliability.
