Derby 'has highest wages in East Midlands'

People in Derby have the highest salaries in the East Midlands, according to a recent survey.

Figures from the Office of National Statistics showed that the average salary in the city was £22,667 before tax, compared to £20,310 in Leicester and £21,124 in Nottingham.

About 6,000 workers were questioned for the survey, which showed wages in the East Midlands have failed to keep pace with the price of inflation for the fifth year running.

BBC East Midlands Today's Quentin Rayner spoke to Dr Richard Upward, an economist at the University of Nottingham.
