Derby man aims for one-way mission to Mars

A man from Derby has been selected as a candidate for a one-way mission to Mars.

Ryan MacDonald, a physics student at Oxford University, hopes to be among the first group of settlers on the red planet in the year 2025.

He has secured a place on a worldwide shortlist of just more than 1,000 people.

The 20-year-old's sister Bronte says she thinks her brother is determined enough to make the final list, but is not sure whether she would actually let him go.
