'Out of control' large Dartmoor gorse fire tackled

Firefighters spent more than six hours dealing with a large gorse fire which was burning "out of control" on Dartmoor, the fire service said.

The blaze at Trendlebere Down, near Bovey Tracey in Devon, covered several acres and police closed a number of roads in the area.

In the spring the practice of swaling - when landowners deliberately set sections of the moor alight - is common and can sometimes get out of control, said a spokesman from Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service.

Fire crews said the blaze was extinguished late on Wednesday evening.
