Essex Police pay CS gas man £21k compensation

A man has been awarded £21,000 in compensation after he was sprayed in the face with CS gas by police officers during his arrest.

Alan Lethbridge, 34, of Romford, has been paid the money by Essex Police in an out-of-court settlement.

The former builder was arrested in Brentwood in September 2009 during a night out and said he has since suffered post-traumatic stress disorder, clinical depression and anxiety, which has left him unable to work.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) launched an inquiry in 2010 and concluded the arrest was lawful but recommended a clearer force policy on CS spray use and more training for officers.

Mr Lethbridge said he hoped to "rebuild his life" with the money and work again.
